Partytime, excellent

Year is coming to an end soon and this week we celebrated it together with the whole company at the annual Nordkapp Xmas party. Whole day of fun program was mastered by Elisa, with support from Satu, Meri, Liam and Petri — Thank you for organising!

We kicked off the day with the breakfast at the office. Official program started with 2018 In Numbers-presentation by Vesa, containing interesting statistics of the past 12 months: For example, now we know that

— we have had 48 breakfast academy sessions
— our Kilometrikisa participants cycled 10798.2 km
— we have published ~1.44 blogposts per week
— we have 1 new branch office registered in The Netherlands (!)

Number 10

Numerals were followed by quick Nordkapp Amsterdam presentation by Walter and Matti, and Monika gave an update on our new Personal Development Framework that is under experimentation in Helsinki HQ.

Say cheese!

After the energizing morning, we headed to Ateljé Finne for a super tasty Xmas lunch, followed by Escape Room adventures in various locations around the town. Later in the evening we gathered back together for a sauna and dinner, and evening was wrapped up with an eScooter race in the office. Junnu was the champion with the new office record time of 10.02 seconds.

On Monday we finally released The Actionable Futures Toolkit after several rounds of testing and iteration with clients and conferences around the world. Pretty great initial response from the community and clients alike, can’t wait to see what people make with it.

Here are the recent updates from this week from the team:

Mika has been helping with redacted to prepare a pitch presentation for potential partners.

Petri has been workshopping with a redacted — a startup focusing on solving one of the wicked problems of our time — climate change. Also, waving hands and doing strategic design with a redacted Big Food prospect on the themes of reducing food waste and circular economies. Kicking off a provocative futures project too. Busy busy, and karma points earned!

Annukka is fighting the flu for the 7th week and now advises everyone to stay home when the flu hits. Other than that, she is looking into web design and accessibility standards for her client.

Topias is finalising UX for the upcoming logistic service and designing a trade and maintenance platform with distributed teams.

At her client, Monika has been designing behavioural archetypes study that hopefully will help the team to focus on features and functionality that bring value to the target customers. She has been also testing personal development framework which we have been developing at Nordkapp for some time now.

Samuli continues working at Veikkaus with slot machine UI-renewal project.

Helmi continues her work at Telia, building new elements in order to improve discoverability and user flows.

Sami has been busy with launching the Actionable Futures Toolkit and several interesting ideas, things and initiatives moving towards 2019. The big topics seem to be creative use of machine learning within unexpected contexts, virtual and mixed reality getting real and heavy industries getting more human. Can’t wait to show the world more soon.

Sami has also been investigating critical foresight, reading up on Latour’s theory of innovation and understanding naftology.

Liam is working with his team at redacted to share and discuss the ongoing product definition and design work. As work on the project will begin in earnest in January, they’re planning releases and getting their tools in order.

Matti and others in Amsterdam have been busy on diving into world of heating and cooling with our latest new European customer BDR Thermea Group, one of the leading domestic and industrial heating appliance manufacturers in EMEA.

Christmas time is great for taking some breath, going out for a nice dinner with the client and chat a bit of other things than work. This is what Satu did with Telia DivX team this week.

Panu is continuing on Telia’s B2B eshop project.

For Shakti, Teppo, Eero, Junnu and Sonja it’s been a standard week at redacted.

Weeknotes are what happened at our studio this week. This week’s weeknote was curated by Matti Mölsä.

Matti is a Designer and Co-Founder at Nordkapp running our Europe Studio in Amsterdam.
